Weekend Wanderings #4: Montgomery, ALšŸŒ¹šŸ

Hi! Happy Friday from Forest Heights in beautiful Athens, Georgia.šŸ’ššŸ¦Œ

Not enough people sing the praises of Montgomery, Alabama, but it is a weird, charming, and historically rich city deserving of more tourists. There is a clash of historical narratives (itā€™s the birthplace of both the Confederacy and the Civil Rights Movement). Itā€™s Hank Williamsā€™ hometown. It was the last shared home of the Fitzgeralds before Zelda was institutionalized. It hosts one of the largest Shakespeare festivals in the world. Aaand, right outside the city are the movie set ruins of Big Fish, now crumbling and occupied with adorable goats!

I got to visit Montgomery for the third time a couple weeks ago and put together a few posts:

  • An Overall Guide - highlights for us weekend tourists including the Capitol Building, Rosa Parks Museum, Dr. Kingā€™s Dexter Ave Church, Hank Williamsā€™ astroturf grave, the Fitzgerald Museum and Cloverdale neighborhood

  • The Legacy Sites - a more in-depth guide to the must-visit Legacy Museum, Lynching Memorial, other stops on the Civil Rights Trail, and Daughters of Gynecology

  • Spectre - the fake town from Big Fish on a private island of goats. Bonus - walk where my dream man Steve Buscemi walked šŸ˜

Thanks for reading and take care!
