Weekend Wanderings #13: Post Election Letter

Hi, happy Friday from beautiful Athens, Georgia. I hope you’re hanging in there.

A lot of people sleep on the South, and it’s a shame because I love living here. There are so many warm-hearted, funny Southerners who make it a special place, and so many weird, awe-inspiring spots to explore.

But around election time, I am repeatedly floored when this region turns it up for the country’s most harmful political ideologies. I will say that it’s a small comfort that my little Georgia county stood with Democratic challengers (it’s that tiny blue dot off of Atlanta). For left-leaning Southerners who didn’t vote for the Dems this time—agree to disagree—but I hope we can unite against the coming agenda. The stakes for human rights are clear, and as someone who loves this earth, I’m deeply concerned about the environmental damage Project 2025 could bring. Downsizing NOAA and FEMA, cutting back the Endangered Species Act, rolling back Biden’s America the Beautiful campaign, and revoking protections for the National Petroleum Reserve will be devastating.

There’s so much to say about what makes the South cool and why these election results are heartbreaking. But in the meantime, I hope you’re taking care of yourself and finding a moment to bask in some healing fall weather. My immediate plan is melting away among thousands of Japanese Maples at Gibbs Garden. 🫠🧡💛
